Nathan Dees.

Macon, Georgia

Paint, clay, and the occasional aquarium portrait.

Nathan Dees is a multidisciplinary artist based in historic Macon, Georgia. He works across mediums, following whatever the piece in front of him calls for: layered paint, small hand-held objects, and work that blurs the line between art and invention.

Favorite Things at The 567

All three highlights, along with the rest of Nathan's entries, are on view and for sale in Favorite Things, the annual $100-and-under show at The 567 Center for Renewal in downtown Macon.

The show runs through November and December 2026, and it is a good excuse to see the work in person: the color and texture of these pieces reward standing in front of them.

About the artist

Nathan has lived in Macon since 1998 and makes art out of the things closest to hand: the hill he walks his dog on at sunrise, the fish in his two planted aquariums, and the places he travels. His style leans toward dark backgrounds, bold color, and layered, atmospheric surfaces, with a streak of whimsy running through it.

He is not precious about medium. A series might start in acrylic, wander into watercolor or ceramics, and end up somewhere unexpected, like Art Pi, an oil painting with a touchscreen and a small computer embedded in the canvas, running a generative art program he wrote himself.

When he is not painting, he is usually restoring one of his Macon rental properties, planning the next trip, or watching the tanks.
